Trump jokes again about parachuting Rubio into Cuba to 'figure it out'

The United States president repeated the image while praising his secretary of state, three days after the midterm elections; the two sources that report the remark place it in different settings.

Donald Trump again joked about sending Secretary of State Marco Rubio into Cuba by parachute: "We are going to parachute him into Cuba, so Marco will figure it out. He will figure it out," he said, recalling that Rubio's parents were born on the island. Periódico Cubano places the remark at the Conservative Political Action Conference gala, CPAC, at Mar-a-Lago, captured in a video posted by that organisation on its X account; Martí Noticias places it at an event for the appointment of Stephen Miller as White House chief of staff.

It is not the first time he has used the image. On October 27, in Corpus Christi, Texas, he said he would leave Rubio in Cuba and that he would fix the situation in about 15 minutes; on October 23, in Fort Myers, Florida, he imagined US ships near the Cuban coast with Rubio in charge of "closing the deal"; in September, during the United Nations General Assembly, he suggested dropping him on the island from an aircraft carrier. Trump also said Rubio "will go down in history as the best secretary of state."

The praise comes after Rubio denied on Thursday, in an interview with The New York Times, Bloomberg's reports that he might leave the administration to prepare a presidential run in 2028; he said his intention had always been to stay until the end of the term. The CPAC gala gathered conservative leaders, donors and representatives from November 4 to 7, after the November 3 elections in which Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress.
