Trump names Stephen Miller, architect of his immigration policy, as chief of staff

The deputy chief of staff takes over on Monday, November 9, replacing Susie Wiles, three days after the Republican defeat in the midterm elections, in which Democrats regained both chambers of Congress.

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday on his Truth Social network the appointment of Stephen Miller, deputy chief of staff and one of his most influential advisers, as the new White House chief of staff. Miller, 41, takes office on Monday, November 9 and will become the 33rd White House chief of staff, according to the official statement cited by Martí Noticias.

He replaces Susie Wiles, the first woman to hold the post, who ran the 2024 presidential campaign and had coordinated the administration since January 2025. Trump thanked her for her work and said she would move into his political operation, without giving details of her new responsibilities.

The change comes three days after the Republican Party's defeat in the midterm legislative elections, in which Democrats regained control of both chambers of Congress, a result that leaves the president facing a hostile legislature for the two years left in his term.

Miller, born in California in 1985, is regarded as the main architect of Trump's immigration policy. During the first term he took part in the entry ban on citizens of several Muslim-majority countries and in attempts to end the DACA programme, which shields from deportation immigrants who arrived as minors. In the second term he has served as deputy chief of staff for policy and national security adviser, and has been one of the driving forces behind operations to deport foreigners without legal status.

The appointment was backed by Vice-President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. The White House credited Miller with a decisive role in government initiatives to reduce crime, tighten border security and fight fraud.
