10 Cuban rafters rescued 12 miles off Isla Mujeres, 14ymedio reports
Mexico's National Migration Institute is holding the 10 men, rescued on Saturday after four days adrift; one was severely dehydrated.
Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) is holding 10 Cuban rafters rescued on Saturday 12 nautical miles south of Isla Mujeres, according to 14ymedio. The Fifth Naval Region received an alert about a wooden raft carrying several people in danger and the Navy Secretariat sent a fast boat; at the scene they found “one person severely dehydrated and nine others” who were given medical assistance.
The group, all men, said they had spent “four days adrift” and survived because a cruise ship spotted them. The migrants asked not to be sent back to Cuba: “We want asylum,” one of them said as he was taken to the Puerto Juárez advanced naval station. A source who asked not to be named told the outlet that among them “there are people from Isla de la Juventud and Pinar del Río,” and that they will receive assistance with the process on Monday.
The group adds to 11 other Cuban migrants who reached Cancún in the past month on two boats, according to the same outlet.
