Protest with empty buckets reported in Old Havana after more than 30 days without water

Residents of Cárdenas and Aponte streets sat on the curb on Monday with empty buckets after more than a month without piped drinking water and without water trucks, according to Martí Noticias; trucks arrived after the protest, but only at the far ends of the area.

Residents of Cárdenas and Aponte streets, in Old Havana, protested on Monday after more than 30 days without piped drinking water and without water trucks, according to Martí Noticias. The protest was made up mostly of women who sat on the curb with buckets: "For thirty odd days people next door protested, they sat on the sidewalk with the buckets", one neighbor said, in remarks translated by Yamacoa.

After the protest, the authorities sent water trucks to the area, but the neighbor said they did not supply the block where the protest took place: "They brought the trucks, the trucks went far away, they were at both ends, very far", in remarks translated by Yamacoa. With no official distribution, residents buy water from people who bring it in from other areas to sell.

The same report lists cuts at other points in the capital: the lower Malecón area, with more than five days without supply; the Mulgoba neighborhood, in East Havana, with 45 days; and the building at Monte 1167, at Esquina de Tejas, where residents say they have gone two months without the service.

On the page "Víctimas de Aguas de La Habana", users also alleged selective manipulation of valves by employees of the state company Aguas de La Habana to cut supply on certain streets and favor water sales from tricycles. Yamacoa has not been able to verify that allegation, which the company has not addressed publicly.
