Beijing rejects US sanctions on two Chinese firms over cooperation with Cuba
The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said cooperation with Cuba is «open and transparent» and that his country will take «all necessary measures» to protect its companies, according to 14ymedio and Granma.
China on Friday rejected the sanctions the United States imposed on two Chinese companies accused of supplying military equipment to Cuba, and warned that it will take «all necessary measures» to protect the rights and interests of its firms, according to 14ymedio and the official daily Granma.
«Cooperation between China and Cuba is open and transparent», Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said at a press briefing, voicing his country's opposition to unilateral sanctions and to the extraterritorial application of US measures. Granma carried the same remarks with the wording «entirely legitimate and transparent».
The sanctioned companies are CEIEC, the China National Electronic Import and Export Company, and Beijing H&C Technologies, both linked to the sale of electronic, surveillance and security systems. According to Washington, during 2026 they took part in operations to supply military components and equipment to Cuba through the Cuban company Duna S.A., sanctioned in August over its links to military imports from China and Russia, 14ymedio reported.
The package announced on Thursday covers eight entities and two individuals: Guillermo Faustino Rodríguez López-Calleja, brother of the late GAESA chief Luis Alberto Rodríguez López-Calleja, and Any Rodríguez Lastres, daughter of the military conglomerate's current president, Ania Guillermina Lastres Morera. It also includes four companies tied to the transport of crude oil and refined products, the Cuban state firms Cubaelectrónica and Tecnosime, and five vessels declared blocked property, according to 14ymedio.
Granma presented the measures as part of a «policy of asphyxiation» and attributed them to the State Department, while 14ymedio attributes them to the Treasury Department. The official daily added that the Office of Foreign Assets Control also authorised sanctions on foreign nationals operating in the manufacturing, technology, electronics and maritime sectors of the Cuban economy.
Cuban foreign minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla wrote on X that Washington, «instead of listening to its own citizens, announces new embargo measures against Cuba», according to Granma. The Chinese spokesman did not respond directly to the US accusations, nor did he specify what measures Beijing might take to protect the sanctioned firms, 14ymedio noted.
