Martí Noticias reveals a Cuba-US meeting in New York that the foreign minister denied
Anonymous sources cited by Martí Noticias place a meeting on Sept. 24, during the UN General Assembly, led by deputy foreign minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío, on the same day Bruno Rodríguez told The Associated Press that no meetings were planned.
Delegations from the United States and the Cuban government met in New York on Sept. 24, during the UN General Assembly, according to sources who asked for anonymity cited by Martí Noticias, an outlet funded by the U.S. government. The Cuban delegation was led by deputy foreign minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío.
That same day, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez told The Associated Press that no meetings were planned with U.S. officials, although he avoided saying when the most recent contacts had taken place, according to Martí Noticias. Two days earlier, Donald Trump had said at the UN that Secretary of State Marco Rubio was involved in negotiations with Cuba, which Havana denied.
Also on Sept. 24, Fernández de Cossío told the state outlet Prensa Latina that there were direct communications and in-person meetings between the two governments, though he said he saw no progress and that the contacts were handled "with discretion." On Oct. 5, Cuban diplomat Lianys Torres Rivera told Reuters that the two countries kept communication channels open but held no formal negotiations, according to Martí Noticias.
Yamacoa has not been able to verify independently that the meeting took place: the report rests on anonymous sources from a single outlet, which is also a U.S. government outlet.
