Several members of Fuera de la Caja released in Cuba while three others remain in custody
Activists Anthony Martínez Román and Karel Daniel Hernández Bosques were detained on Friday after answering police summonses in Artemisa and Havana; Hernández was later released, while two others remain at Villa Marista.
Activists Anthony Martínez Román and Karel Daniel Hernández Bosques were detained in Cuba on Friday after answering police summonses, according to their relatives, colleagues and independent organisations. Martínez Román, a Christian activist living in Guanajay, in Artemisa province, was arrested for alleged "disobedience", as his wife was told by telephone. She asked that he be guaranteed the medical treatment he needs.
Hernández Bosques, a member of the independent video project Fuera de la Caja Cuba, was summoned to the Aguilera police station in Havana's Diez de Octubre district and held for more than five hours, the group itself reported. "They treat us like criminals just for posting content on the internet," the project wrote, linking the detention to the videos it publishes on digital platforms.
Late that night, Christian activist Iván Daniel Calás Navarro said Hernández had been released, along with Eduardo Regalado and the wife of the activist known as el Pregonero de Cristo, according to Martí Noticias. Martínez Román, by contrast, remained in detention in Guanajay, and two other activists, Alfredo Fominaya and Rolando, el Pregonero de Cristo, were still held at Villa Marista, the State Security headquarters in Havana, unable to contact their families.
The Cuban Institute for Freedom of Expression and the Press (ICLEP) demanded the immediate release of Martínez Román and Hernández Bosques, and called on the authorities to inform the families and to guarantee the medical care the former requires. As of the reports cited here, no account had been given by the Cuban authorities.
The detentions coincided with a day of police blockades in Havana against independent journalists and activists who were prevented from leaving their homes, on the same day the United States Embassy was holding a cultural evening with guests from civil society.
