Cuba's state utility forecasts a 1,680 MW power shortfall for Sunday's peak hour
The Unión Eléctrica expects 1,150 MW of available generation against peak demand of 2,800 MW for Sunday evening, a deficit of 1,650 MW, according to its daily report published by Cubadebate and Granma.
The daily report from the Unión Eléctrica (UNE), Cuba's state electricity utility, puts available generation at peak demand at 1,150 MW against maximum demand of 2,800 MW, leaving a deficit of 1,650 MW. If conditions hold, the utility forecasts a shortfall of 1,680 MW during that hour.
UNE says that the previous day service was cut for lack of generating capacity for all 24 hours, including the entire pre-dawn period, and that the actual shortfall peaked at 1,706 MW. On Sunday morning available generation stood at 1,060 MW against demand of 2,270 MW, with 1,210 MW of service cut; for midday the utility estimates a shortfall of 1,450 MW.
Several thermal units are out of service for breakdowns or maintenance, including at the Santa Cruz, Felton, Renté and Nuevitas plants, according to the same report. For the peak hour the utility expects to bring in 50 MW from a Renté unit now starting up and to top up the load with 40 MW from the CMC plant.
Solar parks produced 5,002 MWh, with 778 MW as the highest output delivered at midday, according to the official figures.
