Political prisoner Roilán Álvarez was carried unconscious out of his prison unit, group says

The Centro de Denuncias Defensa CD reported that Álvarez Rensoler was left unconscious after a beating attributed to a prison officer identified as "Agustín," according to what was conveyed by telephone to his sister; there is no official information about his state of health.

According to the Centro de Denuncias Defensa CD, the opposition activist was carried unconscious out of the unit where he is being held after being beaten by a prison officer identified as "Agustín." The information was conveyed to his sister, Ariadna Álvarez Rensoler, during a telephone call. The complaint demands that prison authorities provide immediate information about his whereabouts, access for his relatives and independent medical care.

So far no verifiable details have been released about his state of health, the exact date of the episode or the circumstances in which the alleged assault took place. Álvarez Rensoler, an activist with the Patriotic Union of Cuba and a promoter of Cuba Decide, has been deprived of liberty since January 2026 and holds precautionary measures granted by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

In July, ICLEP documented another complaint of violence at the Holguín Provincial Prison, in which the prisoner said he was beaten with a stick, suffered head injuries and was subjected to attempted suffocation. A month later, the Cuban Observatory of Freedom of Expression reported his transfer to a punishment cell and the denial of a family visit.
