Freedom House lowers internet freedom in Cuba to 19 points out of 100

The Freedom on the Net 2026 report gives Cuba 19 points out of 100, two fewer than the year before, and keeps it in the «not free» category. Diario de Cuba places it among the five most restrictive environments in the world.

Freedom House gives Cuba 19 points out of 100 in its Freedom on the Net 2026 report and classifies the country as «not free» on internet freedom. The score is down from the 21 points of the year before. The breakdown is 5 points out of 25 on obstacles to access, 9 out of 35 on limits on content and 5 out of 40 on violations of user rights.

The organization attributes the drop to the prolonged blackouts that cut off connectivity, to the blocking of independent news sites, to prison sentences of up to 14 years for social media activity and to digital surveillance and unauthorized access to accounts by the authorities.

Diario de Cuba places the country among the five most restrictive environments in the world for internet freedom and notes that, despite the risks, some dissent persists online.
