Dollar rises to 905 pesos on Cuba's informal market, a 14th straight day of gains

elTOQUE's representative rate put the dollar at 905 CUP on Tuesday, five pesos above Monday, with the euro unchanged at 990 CUP. CiberCuba's own index also recorded 905 pesos and called it the first time the currency has broken past 900.

The dollar stood at 905 CUP on Tuesday on elTOQUE's representative informal market rate (TRMI), up 5 pesos (0.6%) from the previous day. That makes 14 consecutive days of gains and leaves it 25 pesos above the October close, when it traded at 880 CUP.

CiberCuba, which builds its own index from automated analysis of currency buy-and-sell posts in Telegram and Facebook groups, put the dollar at the same 905 CUP and the euro at 990 CUP. The outlet described the session as the first time the US currency has broken the 900-peso barrier since it began tracking the rate.

The euro held unchanged at 990 CUP for a second day, with offers between 965 and 1,020 CUP. The gap between buyers and sellers was far wider for the dollar: some deals were posted at 760 CUP while others asked as much as 1,000, a spread elTOQUE attributes to the fragmentation of the informal currency market.

The Central Bank of Cuba's official rate (Segment III) was set for the day at 775 CUP to the dollar and 868 CUP to the euro, according to CiberCuba: 130 and 122 pesos below, respectively, the values that prevail on the informal market.
