68% of Cuban Americans polled by FIU say they will vote Republican on Tuesday

The Florida International University poll, published last week, puts the Republican vote among Cuban Americans in Miami-Dade at 68%, while 73% say they disagree with the Trump administration's handling of immigration, according to Local 10.

68% of Cuban Americans will vote Republican in Tuesday's midterm elections, according to the Florida International University (FIU) Cuban American poll published last week and cited by Andy Gomez, Local 10's Cuba analyst. At the same time, 73% of those surveyed disagree with the way Donald Trump's administration has handled immigration.

The poll puts party registration among Cuban Americans at 53% Republican, 27% independent and 18% Democrat, according to Local 10.

The Floridian, which also reported the poll, gives the same figure of 68% backing the Republican candidate in their district and adds that 77% approve of the Trump administration's pressure campaign on Cuba.

Gomez argues that for most of the older generation Cuba is the main issue, while for the younger generation the economy, the war in Iran, the price of gasoline and the cost of living weigh more heavily. The results will have to come in, he adds, before anyone can say whether the community's voting pattern has shifted.
