55% of Florida Hispanics say deportations have gone too far, Univision and YouGov find
The poll, published on October 19 and cited by ABC, is felt in the Miami district of Cuban American congresswoman María Elvira Salazar, who won in 2024 by almost 21 points and is now level within the margin of error.
55% of Florida's Hispanic voters believe Donald Trump's detention and deportation policy has gone too far, according to a Univision and YouGov poll published on October 19 and cited by ABC. Among the state's Hispanics, Democrats lead Republicans by 4 points in voting intention for the House of Representatives in Tuesday's midterm elections.
The figure shows in the district of Republican congresswoman María Elvira Salazar, where nearly 3 in 4 residents are Latino. Salazar won re-election in 2024 by almost 21 points; a late-August poll commissioned by Democrats had her tied at 45% with her opponent, and another taken between October 20 and 23 gives her 49.1% against 46.4% for Democrat Eliott Rodríguez, a gap within the margin of error.
At an event held on October 23 at the Westchester regional library in Miami, Salazar appeared alongside House Republican majority leader Steve Scalise and Cuban American congressmen Mario Díaz-Balart and Carlos Giménez. She avoided the subject of immigration and defended the president's tax cuts and budget package, according to ABC's account.
A month earlier she had recorded a campaign advertisement in front of the White House warning the president: "Mr President, some of your immigration measures have gone too far," adding that "the same Hispanics who helped you reach the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today." Trump replied the next day from the Oval Office that the congresswoman had gone too soft on the border and said: "María only won thanks to me."
Among those attending the event, ABC quoted Jorge Luis García, a 56-year-old Venezuelan American who voted for Trump in the last two elections and says he will back Salazar again: "I am going to vote for her because she dared to stand up to the president. I voted for him, but not so they would go after hard-working people who have been here twenty years."
