Diario de Cuba: a Mexican fundraiser collects petrol for Cuba as Pemex shipments stay at zero
The Anti-Fascist Cultural League is selling 25-peso stamps to send 40,000 litres of petrol to the island and published a photograph of President Claudia Sheinbaum holding one, according to Diario de Cuba.
Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum has joined a fundraiser by the Anti-Fascist Cultural League that aims to send 40,000 litres of petrol to Cuba, according to Diario de Cuba. The group announced the donation on November 3 on Facebook and posted a photograph of the president holding one of the campaign's stamps, alongside writer Paco Ignacio Taibo II, director of the Fondo de Cultura Económica publishing house. The post does not say how much she contributed.
The stamps are sold at Fondo de Cultura Económica bookshops in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey. Each costs 25 Mexican pesos and, according to the organisers, is the equivalent of one litre of petrol for the island. Cuba's embassy in Mexico shared the announcement. Those behind the campaign include, besides Taibo II, film-maker Sergio Arau, actors Damián Alcázar and Jesús Ochoa and writer Elena Poniatowska.
The organisation blamed the island's situation on the "criminal energy and economic blockade imposed by the United States". The message does not say how the fuel would be shipped, which entity would receive it or what services it would go to.
The announcement follows an acknowledgement by Cuba's ambassador to Mexico, Eugenio Martínez Enríquez, that Mexican shipments had stopped and that work was under way to resume them, and an analysis by Diario de Cuba finding that Pemex recorded no exports to the island between April and June 2026. In the first quarter of the year the Mexican state oil company had shipped an average of 900 barrels per day, against some 15,000 in 2025.
The suspension came in the context of the executive order signed by Donald Trump on January 29, which threatened tariffs on countries supplying oil to Havana.
