Family says a July 11 political prisoner remains under harsh regime after serving punishment

José Ramón Solano Randiche, sentenced to 13 years for sedition in Holguín, is still held at the Cuba Sí maximum security prison more than 20 days after his disciplinary measure expired, his wife told Martí Noticias.

Solano Randiche, who took part in the July 11, 2021 protests in the city of Holguín and was sentenced to 13 years in prison for sedition, remains held under a harsher regime at the Cuba Sí maximum security prison more than 20 days after the punishment imposed on him formally ended, according to Martí Noticias.

The prison dispute began, by that account, when he protested the sudden suspension of the home leave due to inmates in his unit, a decision applied on the day of his young son's birthday. In retaliation, prison commanders revoked his open regime status and imposed six months of disciplinary punishment under maximum severity.

To demand that status back he went on hunger strike for more than a month. The protest ended when the authorities agreed to cut the punishment from six to three months.

His wife, Liuba María Gallo Plácido, says that agreement has not been honoured and that she gets no answers: "That measure began to be served on July 16. The three months were up on October 16 or October 14. To this day they have not brought him back, and they give me no answer. I have gone to ask the authorities and they even want to change everything, telling me the measure is not for three months," she said, in remarks translated by Yamacoa.

Gallo Plácido also voiced concern about his physical condition after the hunger strike and about sanitary conditions at the prison: "Every minute he spends there is more risk to his life, with the amount of disease there is. His health is badly deteriorated, he must have anaemia or very low haemoglobin," she said, in remarks translated by Yamacoa.
