Cubalex publishes an interactive list of 679 political prisoners, according to CiberCuba
The organization released an interactive list on 24 October, connected to its database, with 679 people held for political reasons in Cuba. Cubalex warns that it is not a complete census and that the real figure may be higher.
Cubalex has published for the first time an interactive list of people held in Cuba for political reasons, accessible from its website and connected to the organization's database. At its launch, on 24 October, it contained 679 documented cases.
Of that total, the organization has identified the prison location of 580 people, while in 99 cases the facility where they are held is not identified. The average age is 40, calculated over the 349 cases in which that detail is known.
Cubalex spells out the limits of its own count: “This is not a complete census. Here we publish what we have been able to learn, document and verify. The real figure may be higher,” in wording translated by Yamacoa. The organization considers a political prisoner anyone held in state custody for more than seven consecutive days, and includes cases with apparently ordinary charges when, by its criteria, “the real reason is to punish a protest, a criticism, independent journalism.”
The launch comes against a backdrop of rising repression according to the organization's own records: 1,894 human rights violation events in the first half of 2026, more than ten a day, against 1,279 in the second half of 2025. The most frequent category was violations against people deprived of liberty, with 762 records.
