Cuba and China signed three agreements to advance drug innovation, the development of diagnostic devices and the setting up of a joint biopharmaceutical laboratory, at a biotechnology cooperation forum between the two countries held in the Chinese city of Shanghai, Cuban state media reported on Friday, according to 14ymedio. The meeting brought together business executives, academics and sector representatives.

Mayda Mauri Pérez, president of the state-owned Cuban biotechnology and pharmaceutical group BioCubaFarma, highlighted the group's interest in widening Chinese partners' participation in investment projects tied to changing the energy mix and to bringing artificial intelligence into administrative, research and development processes. According to the executive, that technology can improve production processes, raise quality standards and strengthen clinical trials.

The state report says there are more than 30 Cuban-Chinese projects at various stages of research and development, and that the new initiatives include a joint research and development centre that would be the eleventh established in China with Cuban participation. Biotechnology cooperation between the two countries has produced joint ventures, laboratories and shared centres in recent years, and Beijing is among Havana's main economic and political allies.
