Cuba bought more than 875 million dollars from the U.S. between January and August, a record since 1992

Cuban imports from the United States topped 875 million dollars between January and August 2026, more than in all of 2025 and the highest figure since 1992, according to United States Census Bureau data released by the AFP news agency and reported by Diario de Cuba.

Cuba's imports from the United States topped 875 million dollars between January and August 2026, more than in the whole of 2025 and a record since 1992, according to official United States figures cited by Diario de Cuba.

The data come from the United States Census Bureau, according to the dispatch by the AFP news agency published on October 23. In 1992, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, United States sales to the island stood at 1.3 million dollars.

Fuel accounts for 231.7 million dollars of that total between January and August, in sales of gasoline and diesel. Since January Washington has cut off the Cuban state's access to fuel purchases, but it authorized sales to the island's private sector, according to the same dispatch.

The United States has also become a supplier of solar energy: exports of panels and photovoltaic systems to Cuba reached 6.3 million dollars between January and July, more than 1,000% above the total for 2025. The dispatch attributes the growth in purchases of food, fuel and solar panels to the drive of Cuba's private sector, even though Washington is applying the harshest sanctions in decades.
