CiberCuba: a 14-year-old student builds his own weather station in Ciego de Ávila
Dylan Altunaga Pérez built the instruments and the shelter on his own initiative, according to a post by meteorology historian Luis Enrique Ramos Guadalupe reported by CiberCuba.
Dylan Altunaga Pérez, a 14-year-old ninth-grade student living in Ciego de Ávila, built a working weather station on his own initiative, according to a Facebook post by meteorology historian Luis Enrique Ramos Guadalupe reported by CiberCuba. The teenager has spent close to two and a half years teaching himself about the behaviour of the atmosphere, mathematical models and weather forecasting.
The station includes a thermometer, a digital thermohygrometer sensor, a rain gauge built to the standards of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, a wind vane and an anemometer. The student himself made the ventilated shelter that protects the instruments from direct sunlight and rain, equivalent to a Stevenson screen, according to the same post.
CiberCuba recalls that in September the meteorologist Yosmelvi Páez warned that the country's eight weather radars remained switched off during the hurricane season, and that in July 2025 another specialist had denounced the crisis in Cuban meteorology caused by low salaries and an exodus of specialists.
