CiberCuba: the IRS raises the child tax credit to 2,300 dollars for 2027

The inflation adjustments published by the US tax agency for tax year 2027 raise the standard deduction and the child tax credit, and will apply to returns filed in 2028.

The US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has published the inflation adjustments for tax year 2027: the child tax credit reaches a maximum of 2,300 dollars per qualifying child, 100 dollars more than in 2026, and its refundable portion also rises by 100 dollars, to 1,800, according to release IR-2026-133 as cited by CiberCuba.

The standard deduction for married couples filing jointly goes from 32,200 to 33,200 dollars; for single filers or married people filing separately, from 16,100 to 16,600; and for head of household filers, from 24,150 to 24,925, the same outlet detailed.

The Earned Income Tax Credit rises to 8,496 dollars for families with three or more qualifying children, up from 8,231 in 2026; with two children the maximum is 7,552, with one 4,573 and with none 685. The top tax rate of 37% remains unchanged.

The new figures do not apply to next year's return: anyone filing in 2027 for 2026 income will still use the tax year 2026 amounts. The new amounts govern income earned during 2027, which is declared in 2028, CiberCuba warned.

To claim the child tax credit, both the taxpayer and each child need a Social Security number valid for work; children identified only with an individual taxpayer identification number do not qualify, and in those cases the credit for other dependents applies, up to 500 dollars. Cubans with valid humanitarian parole and work authorisation can obtain such a number, while those holding an I-220A document should check their work authorisation before claiming any benefit, according to the same report.
