Havana's first private nautical store opens, linked to a Spanish company
Delcos Marine is refurbishing a warehouse beside the Almendares River to open Cuba's first nautical store, in a field subject to national security controls; the brand belongs to Redelcos, with offices in Barcelona and in Havana's Palco hotel, according to 14ymedio.
Workers have spent weeks refurbishing an old industrial warehouse beside the Puente de Hierro over the Almendares River, on the boundary between the Havana neighborhoods of El Vedado and Miramar, which Delcos Marine has chosen to open its first nautical store in Cuba, a country where boating, fishing and diving are under strict controls because they are treated as national security matters, according to 14ymedio's report.
The 400-square-meter store advertises on its website and social media goods for boating, fishing, diving and the beach, from rods and hooks to wetsuits and outboard engine parts, though still with no prices or sales. Its Facebook account has been active for almost three years and the first post presenting it as a “nautical market” is dated 15 April 2024. It also promises an online service so that Cubans living abroad can buy and their families pick up the order in Havana.
The website does not identify any owner, but states that the brand belongs to Redelcos, with offices in Barcelona and in Havana's Palco hotel, next to the Convention Palace run by that state company, part of the military conglomerate Gaesa. The Havana phone goes unanswered and the Spanish one corresponds to a shared office; 14ymedio says it got no reply to its questions.
The firm does not appear on the Ministry of Economy and Planning's list of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, although it claims a stable presence and a legal structure registered with Cuba's Chamber of Commerce since 2015. In the Spanish commercial registry it appears as Representaciones Delcos S.L., founded in April 2023 by a single shareholder and later expanded with new partners that the official bulletin does not detail.
